AWR Student Design Competition Winner uses Microwave Office for Power Amplifier Desig

Xidian University, located in Xi’an, Shaanxi, China, is a key Chinese national university that focuses primarily on electronics and information education and research. The university has been approved by the state to be funded by “Project 211.” As such, it offers a graduate school, a national demonstration school of software, and an IC talents training center. Xidian University is an essential base of IT talents training and high-level scientific research innovation.

The AWR University Program Design Competition

AWR is committed to fostering the careers of future RF/microwave engineers worldwide. Specific to Asia Pacific, AWR hosts Student Design Competitions and recently sponsored one such student design competition at Xidian University in Xi’an, China.

The objective of the competition was to encourage students to become involved in microwave and RF engineering and to apply their knowledge to practical designs using AWR’s highly efficient design methodology. The ease-of-use and powerful technologies integrated into the AWR Design Environment™ sets AWR software apart from others and uniquely positions it for use by students just starting out in the complex world of high frequency design.

Submissions were evaluated on a number of criteria, including originality of the application or the theory, clarity of the presentation, as well as the effective and efficient use of AWR software. Prizes for the competition winners, which included both cash and in-kind software gifts, were awarded.

The Winning Design

One of the two winning teams comprised Zhou Chen, Zhen Jia, and Xin Wang. The winning paper discussed the use of AWR’s Microwave Office® software to design a power amplifier. Zhou Chen commented about his experience using AWR software, “It was our first time designing a power amplifier using AWR software. During learning and designing, we found that AWR software is easy to use and has many intuitive settings and very user-friendly interaction. In future RF / microwave circuit design, I will continue to choose AWR software as an efficient simulation tool, because it provides a complete set of design processes from the design, synthesis, simulation, optimization, layout, and extraction to the final verification. I believe that with this powerful tool I will be able to efficiently solve other RF / microwave problems.”

Student Commentary

Firstly, it was very exciting to win first prize! It was our first time designing a power amplifier using AWR software. During learning and designing, we found that AWR software is easy to use and has many intuitive settings and very user-friendly interaction. Especially in the process of the design of matching networks, we can quickly find the maximum power point with the help of the Load Pull Wizard, which is always in good agreement with the element datasheet in handbook. After the simple process of setting parameters, the matching network can be generated automatically, which makes design simple and efficient. With the comprehensive and detailed help documentation and examples, our work can be efficiently done. Because of its flexible and accurate design environment, all of us are very glad to use this software.

Will I continue to use AWR software for subsequent designs?
In future RF / microwave circuit design, I will continue to choose AWR software as an efficient simulation tool, because it provides a complete set of design processes from the design, synthesis, simulation, optimization, layout, and extraction to the final verification. I believe that with this powerful tool I will be able to efficiently solve other RF / microwave problems.

What are your thoughts on the competition itself?
I came into contact with AWR software in a previous EDA design lesson, but had a superficial knowledge. After participating in this contest, Mr. Peter Xu of AWR gave us several training seminars, so that we would be familiar with various new technologies in the software. This helped us complete our designs quickly. Sincere thanks to AWR for organizing this competition, from which we gained a lot of knowledge and experience.

This contest is a very good exercise for professional skills and teamwork ability. I feel that teamwork is very important for the contest. The three of us began to design amplifiers from scratch. During the whole process, we learned from each other, communicated with each other, and cooperated with each other. Finally we accomplished the given objective successfully.
