NI AWR Software Training: Electromagnetic Simulation (UK)

This three-day class is designed to give attendees greater expertise in electromagnetic (EM) simulation using NI AWR Design Environment, specifically the AXIEM 3D planar and Analyst™ 3D finite element method (FEM) simulators within Microwave Office circuit design software.

The class is divided into three main sections to allow attendees to selectively attend any / all sections of interest.

  • The first day concentrates on basic concepts in EM simulation germane to all EM simulators. By the end of the day, attendees will understand the basics of how an EM simulator works, including the working parts of an EM simulator and issues affecting its accuracy and speed. 
  • The second day focuses on EM simulation in the planar layout environment of Microwave Office. The topics are relevant to AXIEM users, as well as for the planar layout aspects of Analyst. 
  • The third day focuses on 3D layout issues in Microwave Office as used in Analyst.

The course assumes no prior knowledge of EM simulators. Some knowledge of basic Microwave Office is helpful, for example at the level of the introductory training video on the website.

Day 1: Practical Concepts for EM Simulators

  • Solving Maxwell’s equations numerically
  • Moment method code (AXIEM) and finite element code (Analyst) principles
  • Ports: Getting an S-parameter
  • Introduction to port issues: grounding, de-embedding, calibration, auto ports
  • Frequency sweeping basics
  • Checking a solution’s accuracy
  • Meshing tips and tricks

Day 2: Planar Simulation in Microwave Office (AXIEM and 2D Layout in Analyst)

  • The STACKUP block and library creation
  • Controlling planar layout: shape modifiers and pre-processing rules
  • Creating an EM-based model and sweeping variables
  • EM extraction flow

Day 3: 3D Simulation and Layout in Microwave Office (Analyst)

  • 3D cells: placement and control
  • Boundary conditions – settings and issues
  • Hierarchy in EM layout
  • Creating layout in the 3D editor
  • 3D cells and library creation

Course Equipment/Hardware:

  • Bringing your own laptop is preferred. If necessary, a laptop can be provided.
  • Special note: 64-bit PCs are required to run V13 NI AWR Design Environment.
  • Software, licenses, and required training materials will be provided.
